Poetry Series – Baby, In My Head

It’s funny because there’s not actually a correct way to date, to love, but everyone seems to have an opinion about your approach to it. It doesn’t matter how you approach it, someone will inevitably chime in to tell you that you’re doing it wrong and offer suggestions on how to correct it. Now, I see the interference before it hits. When my boyfriend asks me what I want to do for Valentine’s Day and I tell him nothing, honestly, and I can hear his sense of relief, I offer up the option to conjure up a story to feed the intrusive aunt when she asks what we did.

There’s not a correct way to date, to love, but there’s a way we each need to be loved. You don’t have to change your approach, just find the one that matches it.

Baby, In My Head

Baby
I never call you that
without putting
you poor
in front of the word.
My most loving parts
still laced with sarcasm
but you laugh
and baby, your laugh –
can a heart orgasm?
I think that’s what happens
when it touches my ear –
your laughter
baby, darling, my dear.

Much love, until next time.
