Poetry Series – Looking Back

The power of shifting to letting go of what others think of you is that your peace is no longer dependent on them accepting your explanation of yourself. Sure, I got commended on my levels of self-awareness and yes, that skill absolutely comes in handy now. The thing is, I didn’t always need to let that self-awareness leave my self.

I find empowerment, now, in being misunderstood but knowing that doesn’t have to throw me off course. Not everyone will understand. In fact, the more yourself you are, the fewer people will understand. Choose to be you anyways, unapologetically.

Looking Back

I used to explain my past, desperately
trying to get someone to understand
who I am, how I feel
where I’ve been
why I am
I used to explain my past
like I was made
of warning labels
damage, pain.
a box marked fragile
don’t you dare
treat me as such
I used to explain my past
afraid it would happen again
constantly
giving it my attention
drawing it back in
Now
I explain my past
just to point out
how grateful I am
for where I am
who I am
the love I’ve found
in contrast.

Much love, until next time.
