Poetry Series – Wonderful

The things we see, feed ourselves repetitively, slowly shape our core beliefs of ourselves and the world around us. This is the idea behind the nurture side of the nature vs nurture debate. We become what we are surrounded by.

I think debates are so focused on figuring out who is right that they often miss the bigger picture. Both sides usually hold some truth to them. On the nature side of the argument, I will tell you that change and adaptability are in our nature. Just because we became what we were surrounded by does not mean that we can’t change the environment and become something different if we so choose. Our nature is our ability to choose.

I wrote “you are enough” on every mirror, in every room in my house, until I saw it enough times to begin contemplating that maybe, yes, maybe I do deserve to be happy and have the life I want. I choose, often, to check in with and reshape my beliefs when they aren’t serving me. Sometimes when I check-in, I find that I’ve been exposed to something enough times that it’s starting to sink in.

Wonderful

He tells me I’m amazing,
wonderful
like, every day
never prompted
not for anything
nor for what I’ve done
just who I am
at first
I rolled my eyes
dismissed the possibility
He tells me I’m amazing,
wonderful
like, every day
and now
I’m sort of starting
to believe it, him
after all
he’s wonderful,
amazing, even
every day

Much love, until next time.
