Poetry Series – Outdated Opinions of Women

The younger generations are always getting blamed as if we weren’t led to where we’re at by those that came before us. We’re berated for our lack of manners and good graces as if it’s not apparent that it comes from a distaste for the way those that raised us tried to use fear to demand compliance but when it failed it instead manifested a refusal for us to be silenced. To the older generation that’s disappointed in where we’re at, this one’s to you.

Outdated Opinions of Women

I hear the whispers of the older men
How we’re a generation of girls that don’t know how to be lady-like
Where are our manners?
Didn’t our mothers teach us not to spit? Not to fight? How to cover our bodies?
Boys will be boys
but girls should be proper
And FUCK THAT
you see, you seek femininity but that’s the divine part of me
and FUCK THAT
is all I can say to your insecure display of masculinity
that’s shaken by spitting, fighting, uncovering our bodies
as if you hope to claim those as yours
as if aggression is the trademark of the masculine
when aggression is the trademark of suppressed emotion
and I see how your generation wears it
after years of being told to toughen up, wipe the dirt off, and keep going, man up for fucks sake
and FUCK THAT
because to man up should mean that people feel safe in your presence
and it’s not my fault if you listened when your feelings were silenced –
THAT was your chance to fight
Fight to be a whole person instead of demanding to own the anger of the world but none of the compassion
60-something years old trying to boss around little girls
because they spit, because of their fashion
and FUCK THAT
you see I softened a lot when a real man came into my life
and by real man, I mean he’s not afraid to cry
and yeah he still owns anger in the car sometimes
but I’m safe to be myself when he’s around
he watches me hock a loogie, spit it onto the ground
and he never tells me to be more lady like
just says – There she is, that’s my girl! What a lady!
Because how lady-like I am isn’t dependent on how much toxicity I’m willing to keep in
not dependant on how long my skirt or well pressed my dress
my favorite thing about real men is they see what your generation says about us and respond
FUCK THAT
because it wouldn’t be ladylike to raise my voice after all, would it?
You wouldn’t have it, can’t even hear it Refuse to listen
and FUCK THAT
is the only thing your worn-out opinions should be met with
so dear creepy old man that’s focused on how much ass is hanging out of a young girls shorts –
FUCK THAT,
man up, find your emotions, redirect your gaze, give us some distance so we can feel safe
we’re creating a new world and there’s no time for your games

Much love, until next time.
